Trump & The Black Community.

During his presidency, Donald Trump took several significant actions aimed at benefiting the Black community. Among these was his support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Trump signed legislation that provided long-term funding to HBCUs, securing over $250 million annually. Additionally, he made HBCUs a priority by signing an executive order to promote their participation in federal programs. Trump’s focus on criminal justice reform, most notably through the First Step Act, aimed to reduce recidivism and reform sentencing laws that disproportionately affected Black Americans. The First Step Act led to the release of thousands of non-violent offenders and provided resources for job training and education to help reintegrate them into society. Another notable action was Trump’s economic policies, which saw the Black unemployment rate drop to record lows. By implementing tax cuts and deregulation, his administration created an environment where minority-owned businesses thrived. These policies, combined with Opportunity Zones designed to stimulate investment in economically distressed areas, contributed to significant economic gains for Black communities  .

Several African American members of Trump’s team also made notable contributions. Katrina Pierson, a senior advisor to Trump’s re-election campaign, promoted the “Platinum Plan,” which aimed to increase capital for Black communities, provide better education opportunities, and reform the criminal justice system. Paris Dennard, the RNC Senior Communications Advisor for Black Media Affairs, focused on outreach and communication strategies to better connect with Black voters and highlight the administration’s efforts. Ja’Ron Smith, a White House policy advisor, was instrumental in shaping policies like the First Step Act and economic initiatives, including Opportunity Zones. Ben Carson, as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), focused on increasing homeownership and improving housing conditions in minority communities. Jovita Carranza, as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA), oversaw programs that supported minority-owned businesses, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These members of Trump’s team played significant roles in promoting policies and initiatives designed to benefit the Black community, particularly in areas of economic development, criminal justice reform, and education. Their collective efforts contributed to a range of positive outcomes, including increased funding for HBCUs, improved criminal justice practices, and economic opportunities that helped foster growth and stability in Black neighborhoods.
